Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montreal (RIDM) closed this 2011 edition of the festival with a special screening held at the Maison Tanguay on Monday night, November 21st. About forty incarcerated women viewed, in presence of the filmmaker, the Swiss documentary Bouton - winner of the People's Choice Award.
Summary of the film:
Bouton is knee-high to a grasshopper, yellow all over and has wide, sad eyes. He is curious, kind and often funny, though he is known to sulk. Bouton is a puppet, the incredibly endearing creation of actress Johana Bory. Today, Johana is sick, very sick, with a cancer that threatens to kill her at 33. She has to explain death to Bouton. Together, with humour, they attempt to counter fear and suffering through acting, stagecraft and story. Blurring the line between smiles and tears, documentary reality and poetic fiction, this first film by Res Balzli is a marvellous tale of courage and the joy of life in the face of illness. An inspiring story in which fate’s cruelty is transcended by the magic of creation.
